Influence of corporations on the policy of the EU
In French
More than 15.000 lobbyists flood the corridors of EU power in Brussels. 70% of them work for big business interests. More than half of the legislation passed in the EU member states has its origins in Brussels.
Corporate lobbyists are here to guide it towards serving big companies' interests. The European Institutions have created a relation of dependency to them. They rely a lot on their 'advise' and 'expertise' to produce policies
and legislation. The European Commission provides them privileged access in advisory structures and in consultation processes. Thousands of amendments in the Commission's proposals that are tabled by Member of the European Parliament are written by corporate lobbyists.
This situation has deadly results on the political direction Europe is taking.
- Lobbyists have managed to pass on 'Competiveness' as the 'official religion' of EU. The public and non-profit sector will be further squeezed in the coming ten years (EU 2020 strategy).
- The lax regulation of the financial sector that permits it to engage in speculative activities is the result of massive lobbying. The whole society is now paying the crisis with job losses and the growth of poverty.
- Climate action by public authorities (reneweables, energy efficiency measures) are criminally delayed by lobbying. Corporations are only interested in creating a new speculative bubble through the carbon market.
Capture of core EU policies by corporations leads in bigger inequalities and the destruction of the environment. The discussion can focus on ways to curb political corporate power and disturb its manifestations in Brussels.
